How to properly install extruded polystyrene board to achieve the best insulation effect?

Publish Time: 2025-02-15
Extruded polystyrene board (XPS board) has been widely used in the field of building insulation due to its excellent insulation performance, durability and water resistance. However, to achieve the best insulation effect, the correct installation method is crucial. The following are the steps and precautions for properly installing extruded polystyrene board:

1. Base treatment

Cleaning the base: Make sure the base is dry, flat and free of debris. The moisture content of the base should not exceed 9% to avoid the reduction of insulation effect due to moisture.

Applying primer: Apply special primer on the base and dry it thoroughly. This helps to enhance the bonding between the extruded board and the base.

2. Laying extruded board

Prepare the adhesive: Prepare the special adhesive according to the instructions and ensure that it is mixed evenly.

Laying the extruded board: Use a toothed trowel to apply the adhesive on the extruded board. The strip bonding method or the strip point method can be used. The extruded board should be laid tightly without gaps to ensure the insulation effect. At the same time, pay attention to reserving the overlap edge for subsequent joint processing.

Grinding and leveling: After laying, use special tools to grind and level the extruded board to ensure the surface is flat.

3. Mesh cloth and mortar treatment

Embedding and pasting mesh cloth: Embedding and pasting mesh cloth on the edge of the extruded board and special parts (such as door and window openings, both sides of the deformation joint), using polymer bonding mortar for bonding.

Laying mesh cloth: Lay mesh cloth on the surface of the extruded board, and apply anti-cracking polymer mortar for protection and leveling. The overlap width of the mesh cloth should meet the requirements to ensure the stability of the overall structure.

4. Precautions

The construction environment temperature and the surface temperature of the base wall shall not be lower than 5℃ during construction and within 24 hours after construction, and the wind force shall not exceed level 5. When constructing on rainy days, measures should be taken to prevent rain from scouring the wall.

At the corners of the wall, the size should be arranged first, and then the extruded board should be cut so that it can be vertically staggered when pasted to ensure that the corners are straight.

After the extruded board is firmly installed, the fixings should be installed within the specified time to ensure its stability.
In summary, through strict base treatment, standardized extruded board laying, meticulous mesh and mortar treatment, and attention to the construction environment and details, the extruded polystyrene board can be correctly installed and the best insulation effect can be achieved.
